Mega Mart fined 20,000 rupees for charging additional fees for tote bags

News2News.in News. Rewari: The district consumer commission has stated that the shop operator cannot compulsorily charge for the delivery of carrier bags. Whenever the store owner sells his goods, he will sell them in such a condition that customers can easily take them with them. The Consumer Protection Commission has issued orders to pay a fine of Rs. 20,000 and court costs of Rs. 11,000 to Mega Mart, which extorted money for handing out tote bags to customers.

According to the information, Pawan Kumar, a resident of Shakti Nagar, had bought goods worth Rs 812 at Vishal Mega Mart in Brass Market on May 14, 2019. When Pawan Kumar asked the shop staff to give him a bag to carry the goods, they charged 14 rupees for the bag while pressuring him to buy it. The complainant then lodged a complaint with the district consumer commission on May 30, 2019 because he had been forced to add the cost of the bag to the bill.

Consumer Redressal Commission Chairman Sanjay Kumar Khanduja and Member Dr. In his verdict, Rishi Dutt Kaushik made it clear that no shop owner can extort money for carrier bags. He called the shop owner’s argument pointless. The District Consumer Commission said that even if a customer cannot take the bag with them, the store operator or seller should be provided with these facilities free of charge. He has issued orders to pay Mega Mart a fine of Rs.20,000 and Rs.11,000 in court costs.
