Delhi: Illegal sand mining continues in Yamuna, Delhi HC gives these instructions to police

The Delhi High Court has expressed displeasure over the illegal sand mining taking place in Yamuna river. The Delhi High Court on Monday directed the Delhi Police to form a joint task force committee with the UP Police to monitor and prevent illegal sand mining in the Yamuna river in Alipore area. Along with this, the High Court has also sought the status report of the matter.

A bench of Pratibha M Singh directed that the Joint Task Force will regularly monitor the Yamuna and work to stop illegal sand mining. Expressing concern over the damage being caused to the environment by illegal sand mining, the High Court said that dumpers and earth movers are also getting involved in illegal sand mining. The bench also took note of the deal between DM Ghaziabad and a security agency allowing mining and JCB machines and said that it is a very serious matter. The bench gave the direction after hearing the arguments of the counsel for petitioner Ravinder.

The petition was filed by a person named Ravinder alleging illegal sand mining in Yamuna river. The High Court called for a status report in February 2023. The next hearing of the matter has been listed for the month of July.

On one side of the river Yamuna are areas of Delhi and on the other side of UP, people living in these areas say that sand is stolen in the dark of night. Along with this, sand is transported through tractors only at night. Police has taken action against these sand mafia many times, but these people are not afraid of doing illegal mining.
