Hijab banned in recruitment exams in Karnataka.

Karnataka Examination Authority banned Hijab: The Karnataka Examination Authority (KEA) has banned the wearing of any kind of head covering during the upcoming recruitment examinations of various boards and corporations in the state. However, KEA has allowed wearing of Mangalsutra after protests from right-wing organisations. The examination authority also banned any type of electronic gadgets like phones and Bluetooth earphones inside the examination hall.

KEA banned

Hijab is not explicitly mentioned in the list of prohibited items in KEA’s dress code, but the rules against covering the head during recruitment examinations would prohibit it. The announcement has been made ahead of the meetings of various boards and corporations to be held on November 18 and 19 across the state. Earlier, women wearing hijab had to reach the examination centers early for thorough examination.

There was a protest outside the government PU college of Udupi.

Earlier, the Karnataka government had allowed candidates to wear hijab while appearing in the recruitment examinations conducted by KEA. The exam was held on October 28 and 29 to fill the vacant posts in five corporations. The hijab controversy erupted in January 2022 when the government PU College, Udupi, refused to allow six hijab-wearing girls to sit in the examination centre. After this, the girls protested outside the college when they were not allowed to sit for the examination.

After this, boys from many colleges of Udupi started going to classes wearing saffron colored belts. The protests also spread to other parts of the state, leading to protests and agitations at several places in Karnataka. After taking oath, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had said that adulteration will not be allowed in the education sector in the name of the new education policy. Also, the CM said that politics of hatred will be dealt with strictly and the atmosphere of fear will be eliminated.
