A 61-year-old man living in Kolkata has got a disease named Plant Mycologist. The man had been complaining of persistent cough, difficulty swallowing, sore throat, and lethargy and fatigue for about three months. After this, it was revealed in the investigation that the person was suffering from fungal disease. He is the first person in the world who has got this infection. Till now this problem of plant mycologist used to have a bad effect only on plants.
This infection related to plants can be fatal for humans
Researchers said that this person, a scientist by profession, became a victim of plant disease due to his constant exposure to plant fungus. According to him, if a person works in the midst of a mycologist fungus, then the chances of spreading this disease increase more. For information, let us tell you that this person from Kolkata did not have diabetes, HIV infection, kidney related or any other serious disease. Doctors told that the infected person was doing research on mushroom and other plant fungus for a long time. The disease was revealed after the victim got X-ray and CT scan done. Chest X-ray was normal, but when the report of CT scan came, it was found that something like Paratracheal Abscess i.e. abscess had happened in his neck. Let us tell you that this condition is so dangerous that it can block the way of breathing of a person and can give them a fatal infection. If it is not treated soon, then a person can die.
Diagnosed with pus in the throat
Doctors extracted pus from the man’s throat and sent a sample to the Fungus Research Center associated with WHO for examination. Here the killer plant fungus Chondrostereum purpureum was discovered. It was told in the report that it is a plant fungus, due to which the silver leaf disease i.e. the color of the leaves starts changing in the plants. Plants belonging to the rose family are at a higher risk of developing this type of killer fungus. The special thing here is that this fungus could not be identified by techniques like microscopy. This serious infection has been detected only after sequencing. This case of Kolkata has alerted scientists from all over the world about such fungal species that can spread this type of infection. Researchers have told that the patient has been completely cured by giving anti-fungal medicines. He was monitored for two years and is now completely healthy.
