WhatsApp Ban: The most popular social messaging platform WhatsApp has banned a record 4.5 million accounts in India. Meta-owned WhatsApp has banned a record more than 45 lakh accounts in India in February 2023 in compliance with the new IT rules 2021. This figure is much higher than the ban accounts in January.

Global instant messaging platform WhatsApp published its monthly report for the month of February 2023. As per the report, the platform banned 4597400 Indian WhatsApp accounts between 1st February 2023 and 28th February 2023. Of these, 1298000 accounts were actively banned before any reports by users. In the month of February, WhatsApp received 2804 complaint reports from India, and the platform took action on 504 reports. Of the 2804 complaint reports, 2548 were for ban appeals, and the rest were under other categories like support and safety. Earlier in the month of January 2023, the messaging platform had banned over 29 lakh accounts in the country.

This user-safety report includes details of user complaints received and actions taken by WhatsApp, as well as WhatsApp’s own preventive actions to deal with abuse on our platform, said a company spokesperson. We will continue to be transparent in our work and will include information about our efforts in future reports. As per the IT rule that came into force sometime back, large digital platforms are mandated to publish compliance reports every month mentioning details of complaints received and action taken. Here we are talking about a platform with more than 50 lakh users. Its purpose is to stop hate speech, misinformation and fake news.
