UCC In Uttarakhand: Uniform Civil Code (UCC) may soon be implemented in Uttarakhand. In the next few days, the draft committee can submit the UCC draft to Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and then it will be passed by the cabinet soon. After the UCC draft is passed by the Cabinet, it will be placed in the Assembly. Uttarakhand government may soon call a special session of the assembly to get the bill passed by the cabinet.

UCC a topic of continued focus

The UCC is a long-debated legal reform intended to provide a unified set of personal laws. This has been a constant focus for the Bharatiya Janata Party. During the state assembly elections last year, CM Pushkar Singh Dhami had promised to implement UCC if BJP wins. Following the election success, the Dhami government had constituted a committee headed by Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai on May 27, 2022. Its tenure has been extended thrice.

Uttarakhand government will call a special session of the assembly

With Diwali around the corner, the Dhami government is considering calling a special session of the state assembly after the festive season. This strategic move can make Uttarakhand a leader in adopting UCC. The purpose of this law is to provide equal rights to women across all religions while removing family and property related concerns. According to media reports, with the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code, registration will be mandatory for live-in-relationships.

Legislative process expected to begin after report

The legislative process is expected to begin after the committee’s report is submitted. Uttarakhand’s move towards UCC could not only set an example for other BJP-ruled states, but also influence the national discussion on legal reform. Apart from Uttarakhand, states like Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat have also appointed a committee to study the Uniform Civil Code.
