Rewari: A retired police officer was scammed out of about Rs 20,000 by cyber thugs posing as IPS officers and Delhi-based DIG and threatened to start a case for viral distribution of a pornographic video. After registering the case, the South Range Cyber Police Station began investigating the case and began searching for the accused.

The victim, a resident of Yadav Nagar, said he received a call on May 7. The caller described himself as DIG Rathore from Cyber Crime Cell, Dwarka, Delhi and said his obscene video is going viral on YouTube. A case is being brought against him. The victim panicked after listening to the caller. When he asked not to register the case, the person who told the IPS said to meet the media representative and have the video deleted. After that, he himself gave the number of a person named Rahul Sharma. When she called Rahul, he requested that Rs 12,100 be deposited into his account instead of deleting the video.

This amount was paid into his account by a mobile shop. In response, the person, who identified himself as an IPS officer, put pressure on him and said the video had not been deleted. A lawsuit must be instituted against him. Speaking to Rahul Sharma again, he told him to break his sim cable and throw it away. Call from someone else’s phone. The victim buried his SIMcord in the ground. After that, he started using his daughter’s cell phone.

Constantly let money flow into the accounts

The complainant said Rahul Sharma told him that another video was going viral that was even dirtier than the first. I was asked to deposit another 71,500 rupees to clear it. Fearing that he would be reported to the police, he took out a loan from the bank and had this amount deposited. Meanwhile, the fake IPS kept threatening him by calling him repeatedly and Rahul Sharma continued to extort money. 1.31 lakh, 7.95 lakh and other transactions in multiple steps took a total of 1,976,600 rupees from him. He had spent all his capital out of fear. After that, he learned that the cyber scammers had cheated him out of about 20 lakh rupees. ASI Amit Kumar from the Cyber Police Station said that after registering a case, upon the victim’s complaint, information is obtained about the accounts where this amount was deposited.
