In the ever increasing cases of cyber fraud in the state, investigation of fake numbers is now proving to be a big challenge for the police. In just one year’s data, more than 1935 complaints have been registered, in which fraudsters have used more than 3000 phone numbers. Of these, 60 percent SIM cards have been issued through fake addresses and identity cards. More than 2000 complaints have also been registered on the central government portal. In these, the fraudsters have used about 4000 phone numbers.
According to the information, investigation has started in the cases reported to the State Cyber Police Station, while the Cyber Cell unit formed at the district level is now sending cases to the Range Cyber Police Station of the division. In Chhattisgarh, more than 1935 cases have reached the local police in the last one year. In so many cases, swindlers have defrauded crores of rupees. Investigation has also started on the complaints lodged directly on the Centre’s portal. According to the officers of PHQ State Cyber Police Station, there is a continuous effort to make people aware so that they do not become victims of fake numbers. Due to use of fake SIM numbers, the process of extracting dump data and CDR is also affected. Police in the districts check about 50 thousand phone numbers every month.
Transaction through fake numbers
After committing the crime, the fraudsters have transacted money online using fake numbers. Have sent money to other accounts through e-wallet or have done shopping with the money. Now the investigation is affected due to fake SIM card. Most of the fake SIM cards were used in frauds committed from Noida, Delhi, Jharkhand, UP and West Bengal.
Trouble extracting dump data
The biggest problem faced by the police to check fake numbers is to extract dump data. Efforts are being made to trace the numbers on the basis of complaints, due to the fake names being known, there is delay in arresting the criminals. Due to the pressure of cases in Raipur district, it is necessary to check more than 50 thousand phone numbers every month.
