Former BJP government had brought anti-conversion law

The previous BJP-led government had brought the conversion law in Karnataka. Even then Congress and JDS had protested against the law brought by the BJP government. The BJP government had passed the Karnataka Protection of Right to Freedom of Religion Bill in the assembly in December last year. But due to lack of sufficient majority in the Legislative Council at that time, this bill was stuck. For this reason, the government had to bring an ordinance in May to give effect to the bill. At that time, the then Home Minister had argued that the incidents of forced and induced conversions have become common in the state. This law has been brought to prevent such incidents. He also said that this bill does not take away anyone’s religious freedom. Any person can choose religion according to himself, but not under any pressure or temptation.

In which states is the anti-conversion law applicable?

Not only in Karnataka, the conversion law is applicable in many other states of the country as well. This conversion law is applicable in Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana. Till now Karnataka was also among them, but as soon as the Congress government came to power, it has now been abolished.

What was the need for anti-conversion law?

The anti-conversion law was implemented by some other states, including Karnataka, so that rapid conversions could be stopped. At present, a large number of weak citizens are being converted to Islam in an organized and systematic manner by means of deception, deceit, greed and other means. Examples of this also come to the fore from time to time. After the introduction of this law, there has been a decrease in cases like conversion. However, the ruling party says that religious freedom is being affected by this law. The atmosphere of the state is absolutely calm, there is no need for any such law in Karnataka.
