Karnataka’s Siddaramaiah government has decided to repeal the anti-conversion law.

Anti Conversion Bill in Karnataka: Siddaramaiah Government of Karnataka has taken a big decision. The Congress, which came to power in the state with a simple majority in May, has now announced the repeal of the anti-conversion law. The Karnataka cabinet has decided to repeal the anti-conversion law introduced by the previous BJP government. The resolution has been passed by the cabinet headed by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.

Decision to repeal anti-conversion law

The bill, adopted by the Karnataka Assembly in December 2021, aims to provide protection of the right to freedom of religion and prohibit illegal conversion from one religion to another by misrepresentation or any fraud. In September 2021, the Basavraj Bommai-led BJP government passed the controversial anti-conversion bill amid opposition from the Congress and the JD(S). This bill was passed in the Legislative Assembly, but it could not be passed due to lack of majority of BJP in the Legislative Council.

After this, it was decided by the state government that an ordinance would be brought to make it effective. This ordinance was approved by Karnataka Governor Thawar Chand Gehlot on May 17, 2022. Given that there has been an increase in cases of conversion in recent times. Araga Gyanendra, the then state home minister at that time, said that mass conversions were being done through greed and force. Due to this, peace is being disturbed in the state and there has also been a decrease in trust between people of different religions. Also, he had said that this bill does not attack the religious freedom of any person and one can follow the religion of their choice but not under compulsion.
