Philippines Earthquake: Strong earthquake tremors were felt in Mindanao, Philippines on Saturday. The intensity of the earthquake here was measured at 7.4. Evacuation orders were given for some areas in the Philippines and the southwestern Japanese coast following tsunami warnings. The waves could hit the Philippines by midnight (1600 GMT) and continue for hours, according to Philippines seismology agency Phivolcs.
According to the US Tsunami Warning System, waves could reach up to 3 meters above tide level on some Philippine coasts. He asked people living near the coast of Surigao del Sur and Davao Oriental provinces to immediately evacuate or move farther away. Phivolcs said it expected significant damage from the earthquake, but also warned of aftershocks.
Additionally, Japanese broadcaster NHK said tsunami waves of up to one meter were expected to reach Japan’s southwestern coast by 1:30 a.m. on Sunday (1630 GMT).
Remark Zentlan, local police chief in the coastal city of Hinatuan, near the epicenter, said there had been power outages since the quake, but no casualties or damage had yet been reported from disaster teams.
