MP News: Patient gets new life after 12-hour complex operation

Indore. The team of doctors at Index Medical College Hospital and Research Center successfully operated on a meningioma tumor patient after 12 hours of surgery. Meningioma Tumor (Foramen Magnum Meningioma) Only one to three percent of patients in the world suffer from this disease. A 36-year-old patient from Simrol was admitted to Index Hospital with meningioma tumor. Due to this disease, she was not able to live a normal life for many months.

Neuro surgeon Dr. Kshitij Apoorva Nigam of Index Hospital and the team of anesthesia department were involved in this 12-hour operation. Dr. Nigam told that the woman was facing a lot of trouble due to the presence of a large tumor in this center of the brain and spinal cord. After this operation which lasted for 12 hours using a microscope, the doctors removed the 4 cm by 3 cm by 3 cm tumor from the body. It is very difficult especially for the team of doctors to perform this complex surgery. There are many serious risks including paralysis during the operation. There could also be many problems like throat muscles, inability to breathe along with the nerves that supply blood to the brain. After the operation, the patient is kept under observation by the team of doctors.

Only three percent of meningioma patients in the world

Neuro surgeon of Index Hospital, Dr. Kshitij Apoorva Nigam told that meningioma is a tumor, which occurs in the meninges. The meninges are the membranes or layers that surround the brain and spinal cord. Because of this there is pressure on the nerves of the brain. This tumor mostly develops slowly, in many cases its symptoms do not appear for years. Only three percent of patients in the world suffer from this disease. Due to this rare disease, its surgery is complex as well as serious.

There are some cases in which due to its effect the patient may also become disabled. Its symptoms include headache, seizures, blurred vision, weakness in arms and legs, numbness in body and difficulty in speaking.
