Gurugram: Doctors at Fortis Memorial Research Institute in Gurugram have given new life to three thalassemia-suffering children from the same family from Iraq through a successful bone marrow transplant. The ages of these patients are 10, 13 and 19 years, and all three were diagnosed with thalassemia major at an early age in Iraq. The hospital was under the supervision of Dr. Vikas Dua, Principal Director and Head of Pediatric Hematology, Pediatric Hemato-oncology and BMT, and other specialists. Where doctors gave these young patients new life by transplanting matched hematopoietic stem cells from sibling donors. Donors also came from Iraq to save the lives of patients.

Dr. Dua said that thalassemia patients require monthly blood transfusion at a very early age (around six months of age). In such a situation, the blood becomes overloaded with iron over time, further increasing the complexity of the bone marrow transplant process. Doctors provided the families of these three Iraqi patients with detailed information about all aspects of stem cell transplantation. The patients were then admitted to the hospital for transplantation of matched sibling donor stem cells, where the procedure was carried out successfully. All three patients were discharged from the hospital within 14 days of admission. He said that the age of these three patients was very young. This could damage the patient’s heart and liver. People should understand that the earlier the BMT transplant occurs, the better the patient’s chances of survival and least complications.
