Preparations are underway to bring a male Himalayan bear for the female Himalayan bear who has been living a lonely life in Jungle Safari for the last two years. To bring the bear, Safari Management has contacted Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park in Darjeeling and Kohima Zoo Management in Nagaland.

It may be noted that two years ago, a female Himalayan bear was brought by the Jungle Safari from the zoo in Assam, Guwahati. After bringing a female bear to the safari, the safari management started looking for a male partner for her. After two years of searching, the Safari Management got information about Himalayan bears in different states of the country. After this the safari management corresponded with him, but he refused to give the Himalayan bear.

Nagaland-Darjeeling ready to give bear

After getting information about Himalayan bear in Kohima Zoo located in Nagaland, the forest officials demanded the zoo management there to give Himalayan bear. The Kohima Zoo management instead demanded a tiger from the Safari Management. While there was talk of exchange of wildlife among the forest officials, the safari management came to know about Himalayan bears in the Darjeeling zoo. Then the Safari Management also discussed with the Zoo Management there.

Chausingha will be given in exchange for the Himalayan bear

According to the safari management, the Darjeeling-based Padmaja Naidu Zoo has demanded two pairs of chausingha in exchange for the Himalayan bear. It is being told that the Jungle Safari Management has agreed to give two pairs of chausingha in exchange for the Himalayan male bear. Forest officials have sought permission from the Central Zoo Authority (CZA) to bring the Himalayan bear. After getting permission from there, the process of bringing Himalayan bears will be started.

decision by distance

There would have been an agreement between the Jungle Safari Management and the Kohima Zoo Management to bring the Himalayan bear, but in view of the distance, the Safari Management was looking for Himalayan bears in the zoos of the surrounding states. The distance of Kohima from Raipur is 2500 kms, while the distance of Darjeeling is 950 kms less than 1600 kms from Kohima. Before this, the Safari Management has exchanged wildlife from Mysore Zoo three to four times by covering a distance of 1300 kms.

Possible to bring animal after election

Despite getting permission from the CZA to exchange wildlife, the safari management can exchange wildlife in October-November after the end of the rainy season. Assembly elections are to be held in the state in November. In such a situation, the work of bringing a partner for the female Himalayan bear will be possible only after the election.
