This is the first time in the history of Nagaland that the state has got a woman legislator for the first time. This is the first time that this has happened in Nagaland since it attained statehood 60 years ago. The state assembly elections have been held 13 times in the state so far, but till date not a single woman has been elected as MLA. Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party’s Hekani Jakhlu has been elected the first woman of Nagaland in the Nagaland state assembly elections on Thursday.
Jakhlu has won the election from Dimapur-3 assembly seat. Lok Janshakti Party’s Azeto Zhimomi got 40.34 percent of the votes, while Jakhlu, on the other hand, got 45.16 percent. Hekani Jakhlu defeated his opponent by a margin of 1,536 votes.
Know who is Hekani Jakhalu
The journey to the assembly has been a long one for 48-year-old Jakhalu. She studied at Lady Shri Ram College for Women and Faculty of Law, University of Delhi and later did her LLM from the University of San Francisco. After completing this, he worked in a law firm in Delhi. In 2005 she returned to Nagaland to start an NGO called Youthnet. In 2019, Hekani Jakhlu received the Nari Shakti Puraskar from the Ministry of Child and Women Development.
Focus will be on these four points
Hekani Jakhlu said that she has been working for the youth in the NGO sector for 17 years, but only so much can be done from that position. This is the reason why I wanted to get involved in policy making and enter the highest decision making body in the state. To empower the youth and fight for the rights of women. Along with this, we have to make our constituency a model constituency and protect the rights of minority communities.
