IPL 2024: Why is Prithvi Shaw not opening for Delhi Capitals? Ganguly gave two reasons

New Delhi. Delhi Capitals Cricket Director Sourav Ganguly has revealed the reason for not making Prithvi Shaw open in IPL 2024. In the first match of this season, Delhi Capitals started the innings against Punjab Kings with Mitchell Marsh along with David Warner.

The decision to pair Marsh with Warner at the top of the order in the opening match of the season raised concerns among cricket fans. Ganguly clarified that Shaw’s role as an opening batsman will remain intact. He said that the team is trying different combinations to check the depth of the batting.

Trying different combinations to test batting depth: Ganguly
Ganguly said before Delhi’s match against Rajasthan Royals,"Prithvi Shaw is an opening batsman. We have decided to open with Marsh and Warner, and Ricky Bhui is a middle-order batsman. Therefore, they bat at different places. This is a different opening combination. Warner and Marsh have performed well opening for Australia. So, we decided to do so."

Warner-Marsh is opening for Delhi
Warner and Marsh gave the team a fast start against Punjab Kings, which helped Delhi score a decent score of 174 runs. However, the batsmen who came later could not maintain the good start.

Ganguly gave another reason for not making Shaw start the innings. Ganguly said that Shaw’s participation has been limited due to injury in pre-season preparations. Due to injury and playing Ranji Trophy for Mumbai, Shaw was not able to participate in the team’s training camp. Despite this, the team has confidence in Shaw’s ability, hence he was retained by Delhi Capitals before the auction and it is possible that Shaw may also be seen opening in the upcoming matches.
