DB Chandregowda passed away: Former Speaker of the Karnataka Assembly and Lok Sabha MP DB Chandregowda breathed his last at his residence in Daradahalli in Chikmagalur district today. He was 87 years old. Veteran politician Daradahalli Byregowda Chandregowda had a long and illustrious career in the political scene of Karnataka. He was highly respected for his dedication towards the welfare of the people and his unwavering commitment towards the progress of the state.

Political career of Daradahalli Byregowda Chandragowda

Born on 26 August 1936 in Daradahalli in Mudigere taluk of Chikkamagaluru district of Karnataka, Daradahalli Byregowda Chandragowda had an illustrious political career. He was not only the former Speaker of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly, but also a three-time MLA, one-time MLC and a Member of Parliament. He served in the Lok Sabha thrice and in the Rajya Sabha once. Chandre Gowda’s political journey spanned multiple political parties, showing his dedication to public service above party lines. He represented Praja Socialist Party, Janata Dal, Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party during his illustrious career. His ability to work across political boundaries shows his commitment towards the betterment of Karnataka and its people.

His leadership skills were evident right from his college days when he was elected as the Vice President of Renukacharya College Students’ Union. Later, he also became the General Secretary of RL Law College. Chandre Gowda’s parliamentary journey began in 1971 when he was elected to the 5th Lok Sabha from Chikmagalur constituency, representing the Congress Party. He was re-elected to the sixth Lok Sabha from the same constituency but vacated his seat to allow Indira Gandhi to contest and win from there.

Between 1978 and 1983, he served as a member of the Karnataka Legislative Council and from 1979 to 1980 as a Cabinet Minister in the Government of Karnataka. In 1980, he resigned from the Congress and joined Karnataka Kranti Ranga. State Congress (U) and served as the Leader of Opposition in the Karnataka Legislative Council from 1980 to 1981.

In 1983, Chandragowda was elected as an MLA representing the Thirthahalli constituency and served as Speaker in the Legislative Assembly from 1983 to 1985. In 1986, he was elected as a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha, representing the Janata Dal political party. In 1989, he was re-elected MLA from Tirthahalli constituency, where he became the leader of the opposition. In 1999 he won a third term as MLA representing Sringeri constituency and served as the Minister of Law and Parliamentary Affairs until 2004.
