Cauvery water dispute continues

The Tamil Nadu Assembly on Monday passed a resolution urging the Central government to direct Karnataka to release Cauvery water as per orders of the Cauvery Water Management Authority. This proposal has been passed unanimously. He said in the House that his government is committed to protecting the livelihood of farmers of the Cauvery delta. What is Kaveri water dispute?

The Kaveri river, which flows through the southern Indian states of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and the union territory of Puducherry, has long been at the center of a highly contentious water dispute. On 16 February 2018, the Supreme Court gave a verdict, after which Karnataka’s annual water withdrawal reduced from 192 TMC (thousand million cubic feet) to 177.25 TMC. This decision also led to a reduction in Tamil Nadu’s share of water.

Following the Court’s decision, on 1 June 2018, the Government of India established the Cauvery Water Management Authority to monitor the Supreme Court’s decision. On August 14, the Tamil Nadu government approached the Supreme Court and asked Karnataka to immediately release 24,000 cubic feet per second of water from its reservoirs.
