BRICS Summit 2023: The 15th BRICS summit is going to start from today in Johannesburg, South Africa. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has left (PM Narendra Modi) to participate in this conference which will run till 24 August. It is being told that there may be a meeting between PM Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping in this conference because this time the reason behind it is huge. Before telling this reason, let us tell what PM Modi has said before leaving for Johannesburg.

According to the Prime Minister’s Office, PM Modi has said that he is going to participate in the 15th BRICS Summit to be held in Johannesburg from August 22 to 24 at the invitation of South African President Cyril Ramaphosa. There will be bilateral meetings with some of the leaders present there, which I am looking forward to. He told that on August 25, he will travel from South Africa to Athens, Greece. This is an ancient land, which has got the honor of visiting an Indian Prime Minister after 40 years.

PM Modi and Xi Jinping will meet

There is speculation about the BRICS summit whether PM Modi and Xi Jinping will meet here or not. Some say that nothing can be said concretely on this meeting, but it is being told by quoting some political experts that this time Xi Jinping has a big reason, which is putting full emphasis on meeting PM Modi. Will put Let us further explain what is the big reason why Xi Jinping is anxious to attend the BRICS summit.

Wants big stature in BRICS conference

BRICS is a grouping that includes Brazil, Russia, South Africa, apart from India and China. China wants the BRICS group to be expanded, so that it can gain a bigger stature in this group. At present, both China and India have great stature. Where China wants to challenge the western countries by weakening the group of G-7 countries by enlarging the BRICS group, India has always followed the principle of non-alignment. Even in the beginning of the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, where China had openly supported Russia, India had taught the lesson of peace to both the countries. Due to this, the prestige of India in the western countries had further increased.

More than 40 countries want to join BRICS group

According to media reports, there are more than 40 countries who want to join the BRICS group. These are such countries, which are moving fast on the path of development. They want to be made a part of the economic development. Being united, they will be heard in international politics as well. China wants to achieve great stature by including these countries in the group. However, if seen from India’s point of view, increasing the stature of China can prove to be dangerous for India only. This is the reason why India wants such a change, which does not harm the image of non-alignment.

These things can happen between PM Modi and Xi Jinping

There will be talks on mutual issues between PM Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping at the BRICS summit. Also, if China talks about expansion of this group, then India will insist on making formal criteria for granting membership of this group. Actually, this group has been formed informally. Earlier this group consisted of only four countries i.e. Brazil, Russia, India and China. It was in 2009, when the Prime Minister and the President of these four countries met for the first time and discussed the economic system. The next year, South also joined this group.

After this the name of this group was changed from BRIC to BRICS. Since this organization was formed informally, western countries did not take it seriously. However, due to the way the countries of the BRICS group have gained momentum in the past years, it has become difficult for the western countries to ignore them. Especially India is getting appreciation everywhere in the western countries. This is the reason why India does not want to tarnish the image of non-alignment by expanding the BRICS group. Perhaps for this reason, India is insisting on making formal criteria for the membership of the BRICS group. If there is a meeting between PM Modi and Xi Jinping at the BRICS summit, then it is bound to brainstorm on the strategy to reduce the tension between the two countries and formalize the membership of the BRICS group.
