India-Canada Row: Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said the Indian government’s crackdown on Canadian diplomats is making normal life difficult for millions of people in both countries. Trudeau said this at a time when Canada has recalled its 41 diplomats. He said that the Indian government is angry that the Canadian government had said last month that Indian agents could be involved in the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada in June.

Justin Trudeau said – making normal life difficult

Canadian PM Justin Trudeau said the Indian government is making it difficult for millions of people in India and Canada to continue life as normal and they are doing so by violating a very basic principle of diplomacy. Trudeau said the expulsion of some Canadian diplomats would hamper travel and trade and create difficulties for Indians studying in Canada. India is by far the largest source of global students in Canada, accounting for about 40 per cent of study permit holders.

Indian Foreign Ministry responded

The Indian Ministry of External Affairs had earlier rejected the idea that it violated the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations. A statement was issued saying that the number of Canadian diplomats in India was very high and they were continuously interfering in our internal affairs. Therefore now there was a need for equality in the number of diplomats. After this, there are now 21 Canadian diplomats left in India.

What did Britain and America say

After recalling Canadian diplomats, Britain and America have also reacted. A British Foreign Office spokesperson said that we do not agree with the decisions taken by the Indian government, after which several Canadian diplomats had to leave India. At the same time, the US State Department said that diplomats are needed at the ground level to resolve differences. We have urged the Indian government not to emphasize Canada’s lack of diplomatic presence and to cooperate with the ongoing Canadian investigation.
