Delhi-Dehradun Expressway: Soon the journey between the country’s capital Delhi to Uttarakhand’s capital Dehradun will be much easier. Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari on Thursday inspected a section of the Delhi Dehradun Greenfield Expressway from Akshardham to Baghpat. He then said that the project would be completed by December this year. The distance between Delhi and Dehradun will be covered in 2-2.5 hours by the expressway.

Speaking to the media in Baghpat, Uttar Pradesh, Nitin Gadkari said that the expressway will reduce the distance between the two cities from 235 km to 212 km. The Delhi-Dehradun Expressway is also known as NH 72A. East will start from Akshardham in Delhi and pass through Baghpat, Shamli and Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh. Gadkari said that the six-lane expressway is being constructed at a cost of Rs 12,000 crore.

Special care for wildlife protection while making the expressway

Giving information, the Union Minister was told that during the construction of this corridor, special measures have been taken for the protection of wildlife. A 12 km long elevated corridor is being built from Ganeshpur to Dehradun, which will have six underpasses for wild animals, two underpasses for elephants, two major bridges and 13 minor bridges. For the convenience of the passengers, 12 types of facilities are also being made on this road.

Gadkari said that in the first phase from Akshardham to the Eastern Peripheral Expressway crossing, which is 31.6 km long, the road has been elevated for about 18 km as it passes through populated areas. The section is designed for six lanes on the main carriageway with six service lanes. It will have three elevated sections and four overbridges to ensure ease of travel. Gadkari said that the expressway will boost economic development along the Delhi-Dehradun-Saharanpur corridor and boost tourism activities in Uttarakhand.
