Bharat NCAP: Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari on Tuesday launched the much-awaited Bharat New Car Assessment Program. In an official statement, the Ministry of Road Transport said that the India NCAP is a significant step in the government’s commitment to improve road safety by raising safety standards for motor vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes in the country.
According to the Ministry of Road Transport, the objective of the program is to provide car customers with a tool to make a comparative assessment of the crash safety of motor vehicles available in the market. Under this programme, car manufacturers will be able to voluntarily offer their cars tested as per Automotive Industry Standard (AIS) 197. The vehicles will be awarded star ratings for adult occupants (AOP) and child occupants (COP) based on their performance in the tests. This will help in assessing to what extent the car can be damaged in the event of an accident.

The central government hopes that this program will increase the demand for safer cars and encourage manufacturers to meet the needs of customers. The government said that with higher safety standards, Indian cars would be able to compete better in the global market, thereby increasing the export potential of car makers in India. At the same time, he said that this is the time when our top priority is how to save the lives of the people. For this, road safety is of paramount importance. Road engineering is a big problem. We are trying our level best to educate people. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari said at the launch event, tell the engineers about what kind of mistakes we are repeating in road engineering.
