A team of researchers from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi, in collaboration with international scientists, has developed an AI-based model that can predict monsoon rainfall.

How AI models work
The AI model predicted an All India Summer Monsoon Rainfall (AISMR) of around 790 mm in the upcoming monsoon season. This means the monsoon will be normal.
It gave accurate information, showing a success rate of 61.9 percent for the 2002-2022 test period. This is based on whether the model is able to predict AISMR within plus or minus 5 percent of the actual values observed each year. The weather information given by it is only plus 5 or minus 5 percent less than its actual value.
The data-driven technology will provide state-wise forecast of monsoon rainfall which in turn will help in predicting the regional situation. Artificial intelligence models have predicted that India will have a normal monsoon this year.
A media report quoted an official as saying that accurate monsoon rainfall forecast can be made using it in the shortest possible time. This work can be done with the help of limited people and in limited time. Looking at its past record, it has been able to provide fairly accurate information.
