In the 2002 assembly elections, Krishnanand Rai contested from Muhammadabad seat on BJP ticket. Mukhtar Ansari’s brother Afzal Ansari was continuously winning from this seat. But Krishnanand Rai defeated him in this election. After this, enmity started between Krishnanand Rai and Mukhtar Ansari.

On 29 November 2005, Krishnanand Rai was to inaugurate a cricket match in Senadi village of Karimuddinpur area. For this, he left the bulletproof car and went in a normal car. While returning home in the evening, his car was fired indiscriminately from all sides with AK 47. 400 rounds were fired at them. 7 people including Krishnananda were killed. 67 bullets were removed from Krishnananda’s body.
