In the Atiq-Ashraf murder case, the Supreme Court has sought a report from the UP government.

Atique Ahmed Murder Case: The Supreme Court on Friday sought a report from the Uttar Pradesh government regarding the murder of Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf in Prayagraj hospital on April 15. The court has sought a detailed report on what transpired that day and what has emerged so far in the investigation. The Supreme Court also asked many tough questions to the UP government.

Taking a dig at the Uttar Pradesh government, the court asked why both were paraded in front of the media while being taken to the hospital for medical examination. Why was the van carrying both not taken directly inside the hospital. The court asked the state government to inform about the deaths that took place before the incident and the steps taken to investigate the encounter of his son. The matter will come up for hearing after three weeks.

A bench of Justices S Ravindra Bhat and Dipankar Datta sought a report from the UP government on the police encounter of Ahmed’s son Asad in Jhansi. The bench also asked the UP government what action has been taken on the report of Justice BS Chauhan regarding the functioning of the police after the Vikas Dubey encounter. During the hearing, the petitioner demanded an independent inquiry under the supervision of a retired Supreme Court judge. The UP government said that a judicial commission has been constituted to investigate the matter. However, the petitioner raised questions on the commission of inquiry and said that the role of the government in this is also under suspicion.

The court has now given three weeks time to the UP government to file a status report. The government will now tell through an affidavit the circumstances under which Atiq Ahmed and Ashraf were killed and the steps taken to investigate the firing. At the same time, advocate Vishal Tiwari of the top court demanded the formation of an independent expert committee to investigate the 183 encounters since 2017, according to the Special Director General of Police, Uttar Pradesh.

Please tell that Atiq and Ashraf Ahmed were shot dead by three people during a conversation with the media on the night of 15 April. The two were being taken by the police for a medical check-up at Colvin Hospital in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, when three shooters posing as journalists approached them and shot them both. Soon after, the accused who shot, Lavlesh Tiwari, Sunny Singh and Arun Maurya were caught by the police.
