History of Congress-28

The Power of Resolve Amidst Oppression: The Dandi March

On March 12, 1930, Gandhiji set out on the Dandi March along with his 79 companions.

Here Dandi march was going on and on the other side resignation letters of village workers were pouring in on Bapu’s call. 300 people left the job. It was just a reflection of the rebellion of 330 million Indians against the British rule.

Gandhi ji said – The laws and regulations made by the British are neither based on the consent of the people nor on the pure principles of policy or humanity.

future orders

A meeting of the General Committee was held in Ahmedabad on March 21, 1930, in the midst of the Dandi March. In this, it was requested to support the proposal of the Working Committee and focus on the salt law only. At the same time, it was warned that civil disobedience should not be started anywhere else in the country before Gandhiji reached Dandi and broke the salt law.

The arrests of Sardar Patel and Sengupt and the village workers leaving government jobs were congratulated. With the permission of Gandhiji, a promissory note was prepared for the Satyagrahis-

• I want to participate in the movement of civil disobedience started by the National General Assembly for Indian independence.

• I accept the aim of the Congress to achieve complete independence for India by peaceful and appropriate means.

• I am ready to go to jail and I will gladly bear any other pains and punishments that will be given to me in this movement.

• In the event of going to jail, I will not ask for any financial assistance from the Congress Fund for the maintenance of my family.

• I will unquestioningly obey the orders of the operators of the movement.

Gandhiji took 24 days to complete the Dandi March. All the way they kept insisting that it was a pilgrimage. There is virtue in eating only to maintain the body, there is no need for delicious food.

In Surat, Gandhiji said- Today at the time of morning prayer, I was telling my friends that we have reached the district where we have to conduct civil disobedience. Therefore, we should also try to practice self-purification and dedication-wisdom. This district is more organized and there are more close friends among the workers, so the attention to our cause is also likely to be more. See, don’t obey his request.

We are not gods, we are weak creatures, easily succumbing to temptations. We have made many mistakes. Many have appeared today only. At the time when I was worried about the mistakes of the passengers, at the same time one of the culprits himself came and confessed his crime. I understood that I have not made a mistake in giving a warning. Local workers had brought milk for us from Surat by filling the motor and incurred other undue expenses.

Therefore, I strongly condemned him. But, this did not calm my sorrow. On the contrary, the more I think about that mistake, the more my sorrow increases. We are doing this journey in the name of God. We cry out for the good of the naked, the hungry and the destitute in our work. If we are spending on ourselves fifty times the average income of the countrymen 7 paise a day, then we have no right to comment on the salary of the Viceroy.

In the end Gandhiji said – I hope you understand the main point of my message. If he does not understand, then the hope of getting self-rule from the present effort should be given up. We should make crores of real common man true trustees.

salt law broken

Gandhiji reached Dandi in the morning of 5th April. Sarojini Naidu came to meet him. A little after the morning prayer, Gandhiji and his companions went out to break the salt law by collecting salt from the beach. The workers did not bow down even in front of the horrific repression of the British rule. The power of non-violence came before the world in its purest form. As soon as the salt law was broken, Gandhiji published this statement – The salt law has been formally dissolved.

Now anyone who is ready to face the punishment can make salt wherever he wants and whenever he sees convenience. My advice is that workers everywhere make salt; Where they know how to prepare pure salt, use it there and also teach it to the villagers, but make them aware that there is a risk of punishment for making salt. In other words, the villagers should be fully explained so that how much the burden of salt tax falls on each and how its law should be broken so that the salt tax is lifted.

In this speech, Gandhiji further said – I am preparing a separate message for women. My belief is growing stronger day by day that women can be more helpful than men in the attainment of independence. I think they can understand the meaning of non-violence better than men. It is not because they are weak – men out of arrogance think they are – but true courage and spirit of self-sacrifice are far greater in them than men.

The Salt Satyagraha had a great impact across the country. Huge gatherings were held in the presence of lakhs in every small and big city of the country. The events of Karachi, Poona, Peshawar, Calcutta, Madras and Sholapur gave a new experience and a feeling was established among the common people that non-violence is the only weapon to oppose this government.

Gandhiji wrote a letter to the Viceroy and expressed his intention to attack the salt factories of Dharasana in Surat district. Along with this, three measures were also given to stop this raid – first, abolish the salt tax. Second, arrest me and my comrades. But, as I expect, this measure will not work if one after another keeps coming to be arrested. Third, pure hooliganism. But at the same time it was also said that if one is beheaded, if the other is ready to behead, then that attack will also go in vain.
