Himachal Weather: Monsoon rains lashed Himachal Pradesh like a calamity. All the Nandiyas here are in spate, due to which normal life has come to a standstill. In view of the rain and flood situation in the state, a red alert has been issued and all schools and colleges will remain closed for two days. Many cities and towns across the state, many roads and residential areas were submerged in knee-deep water. Meanwhile, the Panchvaktra bridge in Mandi district collapsed due to heavy rains.

A swollen river in Himachal Pradesh’s Kasol swept away tourist cars and a part of the National Highway along the Beas river in Kullu was washed away by landslides triggered by heavy rains. Several bridges collapsed in Himachal Pradesh due to the strong current of water. The Panchvaktra bridge in Mandi collapsed due to heavy rains on Sunday. A bridge in Coon area connecting Mandi town and Joginder Nagar met the same fate. The 126 MW Lalji hydroelectric project was also shut down after flood water entered the powerhouse.

India Department (IMD) has issued red alert for 10 out of 12 districts of Himachal including Mandi, Una, Hamirpur, Bilaspur, Chamba, Kangra and Kullu. All major rivers including Ravi, Beas, Sutlej, Swan and Chenab are in spate. Solan recorded 135 mm of rain on Sunday, breaking a nearly 50-year record here, while Una recorded the highest rainfall since 1993.

At least six people have died due to the havoc caused by the rains in the hill state. Three people of a family were killed when a house collapsed following a landslide in Shimla. At the same time, one person each died in Kullu and Chamba districts. In Rajhana village of Shimla, a girl was killed when debris washed away by rain water fell on a house.

Many roads and highways closed

After torrential rains, 765 roads including the Chandigarh-Manali National Highway were closed. Hundreds of people are stranded in different parts of the state, including Chandratal in Lahaul and Spiti and near Sadhupul in Solan district. Train services were also suspended on the Shimla-Kalka route on Sunday due to incessant heavy rains and inclement weather. Around 14 major landslides and 13 flash floods were witnessed in the state.
