Haryana News:The Punjab and Haryana High Court has adjourned the hearing of the petition challenging the voter list process of the Haryana Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (HSGPC) to October 9. This petition has been filed by Angrez Singh of Karnal district in Haryana demanding deletion of the application form for inclusion of the name in the voters’ list of HSGMC.

According to the petition, the Election Commissioner of Gurdwara, Haryana had written a letter to all deputy commissioners (DCs) of Haryana on August 18 regarding registration of voters for the HSGMC voters’ list. The Haryana government had divided the entire Haryana into 40 districts for this purpose and now as per Section 7 of the 2014 Act, a voter list with photographs of voters/votes has to be prepared for each district.

The applicant, who is a Sikh, went to the Patwari’s office and collected the application form to register as a voter for the HSGMC elections. When the petitioner saw the application form, he was surprised as the application form did not comply with the provisions of Section 2 (J) and Section 8 of the HSGMC Act 2014. The application states that Sikh means a person who claims to be a Sikh. According to the petition, the rules also stipulate that no one can be registered as a voter if he has matted hair, shaves or trims his beard, or consumes tobacco, kutha (halal meat) or intoxicants. According to the petitioner, the application does not define who is a Sikh within the meaning of the HSGMC Act.
