Haryana: NASA has shown a mirror to the governments of Delhi and Punjab, which have accused stubble burning in Haryana of being responsible for pollution in New Delhi. The Punjab government’s claims on stubble management have failed completely. The satellite image published on NASA’s official website has exposed the Punjab government.

The governments of Delhi and Punjab always blame farmers here for New Delhi’s pollution, citing incidents of stubble burning in Haryana as the reason. The reality, however, is that the satellite images on NASA’s official website have revealed the reality of stubble burning in Punjab. NASA’s website shows that the number of stubble burning cases in Punjab is more than double that in Haryana. While active fire cases in Haryana are less than half of Punjab. As per the directives of Chief Minister Manohar Lal, farmers are being continuously advised not to burn stubble and crop residue management equipment is being provided to farmers on subsidy basis.

The Punjab government constantly claims that there is less stubble burning in Punjab and the Delhi government has also accused Haryana of burning more stubble which is completely baseless. This was also confirmed by satellite images on the NASA website. Stubble burning is becoming increasingly common in Punjab. Instead of making allegations and counter-allegations, the Punjab government should focus on reducing the cases of stubble burning in the state. To this end, the Government of Punjab should, in line with the Haryana policy and subsidies provided to farmers, sensitize farmers in their state on crop residue management.
