Delhi Air Quality: A layer of smog covered Delhi on Monday morning amid rapidly deteriorating air quality. Delhi last recorded extremely poor air quality on May 17, when the AQI was 336. According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), at 4 pm on Monday, the level of pollutant PM 10 in Delhi’s air was 215 micrograms per cubic meter and the level of PM 2.5 was 119 micrograms per cubic meter. It is considered healthy only when the level of PM 10 in the air is below 100 and the level of PM 2.5 is below 60. According to this, there is currently twice more pollution in the air of Delhi than the standards. Shadipur area of ​​Delhi was the most polluted. The index here stood at 342.

According to the Air Quality Early Warning System, the weather factors will generally remain the same during the next six days. However, due to sunshine throughout the day, the pollution level has decreased slightly on Monday as compared to Sunday. With the drop in temperature and the onset of winter, the suffocating days of pollution have started in Delhi. The level of pollution in Delhi’s air continues to remain higher than normal. Due to this, people will not get relief from polluted air. Pollution levels will remain in the poor or very poor category. There is no chance of rain in Delhi at present. Overall, there is no sign of relief in Delhi right now.

Meteorological department officials said the air quality in Delhi-NCR will remain extremely poor for the next few days due to drop in temperature and emissions from stubble burning. According to officials, wind speed is slow and there has been less rainfall in October unlike the last two years.

The central government’s Decision Support System (DSS) for air quality management estimates that there may be an increase in burning of paddy straw from Monday. According to the concerned department, the share of smoke emanating from burning of paddy straw in PM 2.5 pollution in Delhi on Sunday was 16 percent and on Monday it may increase to 30-32 percent. According to the Union Environment Ministry, the maximum share of stubble burning incidents in PM 2.5 pollution in Delhi was 34 percent on November 3 last year and 48 percent on November 7 in 2021.

The air quality in the national capital remained very poor for the second consecutive day with the overall air quality index (AQI) reaching 309 on Monday morning, according to data from the System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR). On Lodhi Road, the AQI was at 304 with PM 2.5 concentration in the very poor category and PM 10 in the moderate category at 177. Moreover, the level of PM 2.5 at IIT Delhi station was 313, which was in the very poor category, while PM 10 was in the moderate category.
