Nitish Kumar sometimes became the Chief Minister for seven days, sometimes for three years and sometimes within a year he took oath as the Chief Minister again. Let us know the journey of Nitish Kumar as Chief Minister.

Know when Nitish Kumar became the Chief Minister of Bihar:

  1. First term (2000): Nitish Kumar was elected Chief Minister of Bihar in March 2000. The government lasted for 7 days and Nitish failed to prove majority in the House and resigned.
  2. Second term (2005–2010): After the 2005 Bihar Assembly elections, Nitish Kumar took oath as Chief Minister. Completed his tenure successfully. Received praise for works like construction of roads.
  3. Third term (2010-2014): In 2010, Nitish Kumar took oath as Chief Minister for the third time. Four years later, taking responsibility for the party’s defeat in the Lok Sabha elections, he resigned from the post of Chief Minister on 17 May 2014. After this Jitan Ram Manjhi was made the Chief Minister.
  4. Fourth term (2015): In the year 2015, Nitish Kumar’s discord with Jitan Ram Manjhi started. Angered by Jitan Ram Manjhi’s decision, Nitish Kumar once again took charge in 2015 and took oath as Chief Minister for the fourth time.
  5. Fifth term (2015 – 2017): Nitish Kumar again became the Chief Minister on 22 February 2015 after the 2015 Bihar Legislative Assembly election. This time the grand alliance comprising JD(U), RJD and Congress won the elections. Tejashwi Yadav was made the Deputy Chief Minister. However, Nitish Kumar resigned after two years on July 26, 2017, after Tejashwi Yadav was accused of corruption.
  6. Sixth term (2017 – 2020): After resigning, Nitish Kumar changed sides and joined NDA. Came back to power within a few hours and took over as Chief Minister. Sushil Modi was made the Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar.
  7. Seventh term (2020): Nitish Kumar was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Bihar for the seventh time in 2020. This time Nitish’s alliance was with NDA. Nitish’s party won less seats in the elections yet NDA made him the Chief Minister. However, just two years later, on August 9, 2022, he left the NDA alliance and joined the Grand Alliance.
  8. Eighth term (2022 – present): Took oath as Chief Minister for the eighth time as the leader of the Grand Alliance on 10 August 2022. Now there is speculation that on January 28, Nitish Kumar will once again leave the Grand Alliance and return to the NDA. If this happens then Nitish Kumar will become the Chief Minister of Bihar for the ninth time.
