Oommen Chandy passes away: Veteran Congress leader and former Chief Minister of Kerala Oommen Chandy passed away after a prolonged illness. Chandy, 79, was treated at the Charite Hospital in Berlin last October. The death of the former Kerala Chief Minister was announced by his son in a Facebook post. He wrote in his Facebook post that “Appa has passed away”.

Oommen Chandy was the Chief Minister of Kerala twice from 2004-06 and 2011-16. The veteran Congress leader began his tenure as an MLA by winning the 1970 state assembly elections at the age of 27. He later won 11 consecutive elections since then. Chandy represented only his home constituency Puthuppally in the last five decades.

In 2022, he became the longest serving member of the state assembly by representing Puthupalli in the House for 18,728 days. He surpassed the record held by the late KM Mani, former supremo of Kerala Congress (M). Chandy has served four times as a minister in different cabinets and four times as Leader of the Opposition in the state assembly during his political career.
