One Nation-One Election: Ahead of the special session of Parliament on One Nation One Election, opposition parties had criticized the government’s move to set up a committee at the Centre, saying it would pose a threat to the federal structure of the country. Meanwhile, the first official meeting of the One Nation One Election Committee will be held on September 23, which will be chaired by former President Ram Nath Kovind.

‘One Nation, One Election’ was announced on 31 August. Many political parties, politicians and election experts have since been trying to guess the agenda for calling a special session of Parliament. The central government led by PM Modi has formed a committee of eight members to investigate and make recommendations as soon as possible on the issue of holding Lok Sabha, Assembly elections and other elections simultaneously.

These leaders are included in the committee

Home Minister Amit Shah, Congress leader in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Choudhary, former leader of opposition in Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad and former Finance Commission Chairman NK Singh will be members of this committee. Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal will attend the committee meetings as a special invitee, while Legal Affairs Secretary Niten Chandra will be the secretary of the panel. This committee will examine the Representation of the People Act and any other laws and rules. Also, the committee will examine whether the support of the states will be required to amend the Constitution regarding this matter.

According to media reports, a committee was formed on One Nation One Election. This has further intensified the speculation that a special session of Parliament is being called to introduce this bill. Since coming to power in 2014, PM Modi has been a strong supporter of the idea of simultaneous elections.
