Nipah virus in Kerala: Two people died due to Nipah virus in Kozhikode district of Kerala. Regarding this, the Health Department of Kerala issued a high alert late on Monday night i.e. on 11th September. Meanwhile, Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya confirmed on Tuesday that the two unnatural deaths in Kerala’s Kozhikode district were due to Nipah virus. Mandaviya said a central team of experts has been sent to Kerala to take stock of the situation and assist the state government in managing the Nipah virus infection.

Samples of one deceased and four of his relatives from Kozhikode were sent for testing to the National Institute of Virology in Pune. After which Nipah virus has been confirmed.

Control Room in Kozhikode

Meanwhile, the Kerala government has set up a control room in Kozhikode and advised people to use masks as a precautionary measure.

In this regard, Kerala Health Minister Veena George said that we have opened a control room here. To coordinate precautionary measures, we have formed 16 committees and all hospitals and healthcare workers have been directed to follow infection control protocols, including wearing PPE kits. Apart from this, he also advised to avoid unnecessary hospital visits.

George said there is no need for any fear or concern at the moment and if the results are positive, then all these measures are precautionary measures to avoid more cases. We hope it comes negative.

Apart from this, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said in a video message that the state government is taking the two deaths very seriously. The Chief Minister advised people to exercise caution and said there was no need to worry as those who were in close contact with the deceased were undergoing treatment.
