Indira Gandhi Death Anniversary: Today i.e. 31st October is the 39th death anniversary of the country’s former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. On this occasion, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge paid tribute to the former Prime Minister. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Congress Parliamentary Party President Sonia Gandhi and party MP Rahul Gandhi paid tribute to the former Prime Minister on his death anniversary at Shakti Sthal in Delhi. It should be noted that Indira Gandhi served as the first and only female Indian Prime Minister from January 1966 to March 1977 and again from January 1980 until her assassination in 1984.

Only child of Pandit Nehru

Indira was born on 19 November 1917 in Allahabad. She was the only child of Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru was the first Prime Minister of independent India. His entire family was involved in the freedom struggle. His grandfather, Motilal Nehru, was a renowned lawyer, activist and politician affiliated with the Indian National Congress (INC). He served as Congress President twice, from 1919 to 1920 and from 1928 to 1929.

His mother, Kamala Nehru, was also a freedom fighter and member of the Congress. She attended Modern School, St. Cecilia’s in Delhi and St. Mary’s Convent in Allahabad. She also went to the International School of Geneva, the École Nouvelle in Beaux and the Pupils’ Own School in Poona and Bombay. Indira also studied at Visva Bharati, Santiniketan, where she was named Priyadarshini by the great poet and writer Rabindranath Tagore.
