Former CM Jagadish Shettar, who left the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and joined the Congress, has faced a crushing defeat. Shettar lost the Hubballi-Dharwad Central seat to BJP’s Mahesh Tenginakai. He was miffed over being denied ticket by the BJP and had joined hands with the Congress a few days before the Karnataka Assembly elections. While addressing the media after the election, he has given the main reason for his defeat.

Said – Defeat due to money power

BJP candidate from Hubli-Dharwad Central seat Mahesh Tenginakai got 95064 votes while Jagadish Shettar got 60775 votes. The tallest leader of the Lingayat community faced a crushing defeat in the elections at the hands of his own disciple. He said that I have been defeated because of money power. Money can change a lot in present times. At the same time, he also answered the question of leaving BJP saying that BJP had not done enough with him.

Congress’s hand was held only last month

Last month, Shettar had announced his resignation from the BJP after he was denied ticket for the May 10 polls. Jagadish Shettar joined the Congress party in Bengaluru in the presence of Congress Party National President Mallikarjun Kharge, Karnataka Congress President DK Shivakumar and Randeep Surjewala. After joining the Congress, the leader of the Lingayat community had said that because of many people of BJP, I am feeling humiliated. When the Congress government was in Karnataka, Jagadish Shettar played the role of a senior leader of the opposition.

Posters put up outside Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar’s residence
