Fathima Beevi Passes Away: Justice M Fatima Biwi, who was appointed the first woman judge of the Supreme Court, breathed her last on Thursday at the age of 96. She also achieved the distinction of being the first Muslim woman to reach a high position in the Supreme Court. Fatima Beevi was the first woman judge of the Supreme Court until her retirement on April 29, 1992. After her tenure as a Supreme Court judge, Fathima Beevi made her mark in the political arena by being appointed as the Governor of Tamil Nadu.

Fatima Biwi’s career

Born on April 30, 1927 in Pathanamthitta, Kerala, Fathima Beevi completed her schooling from the Catholic High School there. After this he completed his Bachelor of Science degree from Thiruvananthapuram University College. He obtained his Bachelor of Laws degree from the Government Law College, Thiruvananthapuram. Enrolled as an advocate on 14 November 1950, Fathima Beevi started her legal career in the lower courts of Kerala and held important positions in the judiciary.

Starting with Munshi, he served as Principal Judicial Magistrate, District and Sessions Judge, Judicial Member of the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal and High Court Judge. After retiring as a judge of the Kerala High Court in 1989, he was appointed as a judge of the Supreme Court in 1989. With this she became the first woman judge of the Supreme Court. He retired from this work in 1992.
