Eight marines working at Global Technologies and Consultancy in Doha, Qatar were arrested in 2022 on spying charges. But no reason was given for this. The prisoner was sentenced to death 1 year after his arrest. This development shocked India.

Family members of the 8 convicts had written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging him to seek advice from legal experts and negotiate for their release. Retired Servicemen Association had also appealed. After this, an appeal was filed by India in the Qatar court. The Qatar Court, which initially refused to respond. It has now agreed to hear the appeal, which is likely to happen soon.

India’s Ambassador to Qatar had met these personnel in jail on October 1 this year. Not only this, the families of some of these eight have also met in Qatar. Those awarded death sentence include Captain Navtej Singh Gill, Captain Saurabh Vashishtha, Commander Purnendu Tiwari, Captain Birendra Kumar Verma, Commander Sugunakar Pakala, Commander Sanjeev Gupta, Commander Amit Nagpal and Sailor Ragesh.
