What is COP 28?

For nearly three decades, governments around the world have been meeting almost every year to work toward a global response to the climate emergency. Under the 1992 United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), every country in the world is bound by a treaty to avoid dangerous climate change and find ways to equitably reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

COP stands for Conference of the Parties under the UNFCCC. It consists of 197 countries that agreed to the UNFCCC in 1992. This event is being held for the 28th time. Developing countries have won on key climate finance issues this time. At the COP 28 climate change conference in Dubai, countries will assess for the first time how far they are in curbing global warming. This is a process called global stocktake.

A fund was created to fund

On the opening day of the COP28 climate conference in Dubai, a fund has been created to help developing countries deal with the impact of climate change. It is likely to bring in approximately $400 million. The host UAE pledged 100 million, the EU pledged 275 million, the US pledged 17.5 million and Japan pledged 10 million. The creation of this fund was first announced during COP27 in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt last year.
