BRICS Summit 2023: BRICS summit is held in Johannesburg, South Africa. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping were seen walking and talking side by side while sharing the dais. Also, both the leaders shook hands and greeted each other. At the same time, on Wednesday, PM Modi and Jinping participated in the entire session, but both stood separately while posing for photographs. A conversation between PM Modi and Xi Jinping was caught on cameras soon after the five-nation BRICS grouping agreed to expand its membership and invite six more countries to join the grouping.
Talks were held last November as well
Last November, PM Modi shook hands with the Chinese President and held talks at a formal dinner for G20 leaders in Bali, their first face-to-face meeting in public since the start of the military standoff in Ladakh in 2020. Relations between India and China have been strained since the skirmish between the two armies in the Galwan Valley in June 2020. Both countries have held 19 rounds of military-level talks to resolve the situation.
Just on August 14, talks to end the deadlock in eastern Ladakh were not successful in the Corps Commander level discussion. However, the statement issued ahead of the BRICS summit and the upcoming G20 meeting in Delhi is raising the possibility that bilateral talks between PM Modi and Xi Jinping may also take place.
