Due to continued challenges by the Government of India, the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan in New Delhi is being closed permanently with effect from November 23, 2023, the Afghan Embassy said in a statement. We are sorry to hear that. The statement further said that while closing the embassy on September 30, the Government of Afghanistan was expecting that the Government of India would take a favorable stance to resume normal operations of the Embassy. But, despite waiting for eight weeks, the visas of Afghan diplomats were not extended. The behavior of the Indian government has also not changed.
The embassy also said that there was constant pressure from both the Taliban government of Afghanistan and the Indian government to give up control of the embassy. Faced with this pressure, the embassy had to take this difficult decision. Further said that India has been a partner of the erstwhile Republic of Afghanistan since 2001. Everyone has certain limitations due to political reasons. Also said that some balance has to be maintained in geopolitically difficult times.
On behalf of the Afghan Embassy, it was said that due to decreasing staff and resources, continuing our mission has become a big challenge. The help we needed from consular officers for visa renewal and other tasks was not available on time. Problems are increasing within the group and this impacts work.
