India’s national cyber security agency CERT-IN has issued an advisory regarding an Android malware named “Daam”. According to the agency, the Android malware is capable of “stealing sensitive data, bypassing antivirus programs and deploying ransomware on targeted devices”. The malware spreads with various Android APK files to infect the target device. It is spread through sources such as third party websites and applications downloaded from untrustworthy or unknown sources.
Once successfully in the device, the malware bypasses the device’s security checks and steals sensitive data and permissions, such as “read history and bookmarks and read call logs”. Also capable of hacking, accessing camera, modifying device password, taking screenshots, stealing SMS, downloading/uploading files etc. and transmitting from Victim’s device to C2 server.”
“Dam” uses the AES encryption algorithm to encrypt the files and after a successful attempt, it removes other files from the device’s storage, leaving only encrypted files with the “enc” extension and the ransom note “readme_now.txt”. leaves with.
Do’s and Avoid’s
CERT-IN has given some practices and recommendations to avoid being targeted by malware. It advised limiting download sources to official app stores and “reviewing app description, number of downloads, user reviews, comments and additional information” before downloading. Understand in simple words, we should avoid downloading anything from Untrusted Sources.
When downloading anything from Untrusted Sources, it does not check for viruses and that is why different types of viruses attack your device.
CERT-In advised users to “check links provided in messages or emails before clicking on them” and only click on links that clearly state the website domain.
It has been said in the advisory that avoid sharing information related to the bank through any kind of message and if anything is misunderstood, inform the concerned bank immediately.
CERT-IN has asked users to be careful with shortened URLs such as bit.ly and Tinyurl.
Meanwhile, India saw an 18 percent increase in weekly cyber attacks during the first quarter of 2023, with each organization facing an average of 2,108 attacks per week.
