To prevent cybercrime in Haryana, work is being done at many levels. Cyber Cell of Haryana Police has taken major action in the past few times to crack down on criminals. From January 1, 2022, the Cyber Crime Cell of the Haryana Police has blocked about 5 lakh SIM cards being used in the Mewat region of the state for cyber fraud. These SIM cards were being used in around 40 villages, the police have also identified at least 402 criminals involved in cyber fraud.
As per the information received, the police were processing 66,784 complaints registered between January 1, 2022 and December 31, 2022, in which Rs 301.48 crore was allegedly lost to cyber crimes starting from Mewat. Please tell that Mewat is an area of Nuh district of Haryana, which is notorious for being the center of cyber crime. Till now Cyber Cell has registered 2165 cases, arrested 1065 people. 46.91 crore has been recovered or suspected fraudulent transactions have been stopped. Giving information, the officials said that the fake SIM card was identified by Telecom SIM Subscriber Verification (ASTR), a tool developed by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT). In this, the help of artificial intelligence and facial recognition powered solution was taken.
We used cell tower dump analysis in Mewat to identify 496562 mobile numbers issued from other states, said a senior cyber cell official. We have identified 15672 numbers and blocked 1959. Eleven suo moto cases have been registered. Suspected links with other states were found in six of these cases. The details have been shared with the respective states. Explaining the modus operandi, said one person used to arrange SIM cards with fake documents, another person used to link these SIM cards to bank accounts and make payments. The third person used the second SIM card to call and defraud potential targets, while the fourth extorted money. The criminals mostly used to target people living far away to avoid arrest.
