Success Story: Sonya Christian has been appointed permanent chancellor of the California Community College System, America’s largest and most prestigious public higher education system. In recognition of her talent and reputation, California Community Colleges has appointed Dr. Sonya Christian, who graduated from the University of Kerala, as its 11th Chancellor. Her appointment is all the more significant in the sense that she is the first person not only from India but also of South Asian origin to head a university system.

California Community College is the largest higher education system in the US. It is spread over 73 districts and consists of 116 colleges. An official release said Sonya Christian, the college system’s 11th permanent chancellor, was elected unanimously on February 23 by the California Community College Board of Governors. Sonya Christian was born on 28 July 1966 in Quilon, Kerala to Paul and Pamela Christian. She graduated in Mathematics from the University of Kerala in 1987 and then went to the US for further studies. During his studies, he worked as an education scientist in several colleges. In 1991, she became a lecturer at American River College in Sacramento. After working here for some time, he worked as an assistant professor at Bakersfield College in California.
