Art director Thota Tharani teams up with Mani Ratnam for Ponniyin Selvan
Mani Ratnam and art director Thota Tharani have teamed up after years. The two are coming together to take viewers back to the Chola kingdom with their film Ponniyin Selvan. The National Award-winning art director has worked with Mani Ratnam in numerous projects like Nayagan and Thalapathy.
Ponniyin Selvan, a dream project of Mani Ratnam, is based on the novel of the same name by Tamil writer Kalki. The period film will need someone who has extensive knowledge of the architecture and aesthetics of the bygone era, and Thota Tharani is the perfect fit for the project.
Thota Tharani has also worked on Mani's debut film Pallavi Anupallavi. In the past, he has teamed up with Mani Ratnam for Geetanjali, Anjali, Thiruda Thiruda, Mudhalvan and Agni Natchathiram.
Recently, Mani Ratnam faced backlash on social media for roping in lyricist Vairamuthu for writing all the songs of the upcoming film. AR Rahman was also slammed for working with the lyricist in the film. Vairamuthu has been accused of sexual harassment by several women including singer Chinmayi Sripada.
Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Vijay Sethupati, Jayam Ravi, Mohan Babu, Aditi Rao Hydari are some of the actors who are part of Mani Ratnam's ambitious project. An official announcement on the film is yet to be made by the director.
