After review, we will move towards implementing UCC in the state by bringing a bill in the upcoming assembly session.

The committee was formed in 2022
A five-member committee headed by Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai was constituted to draft the UCC. The committee was formed in May 2022. The UCC drafting panel also includes retired judge Pramod Kohli, social activist Manu Gaur, former Uttarakhand Chief Secretary Shatrughan Singh and Doon University Vice-Chancellor Surekha Dangwal. A total of four extensions have been given to the committee to draft the UCC. This January, 15 more days were given.

BJP had promised
Passing a law on UCC will fulfill a major promise made by the BJP to the people of the state ahead of the 2022 assembly elections.
