The Supreme Court on Friday stayed the Allahabad High Court order allowing carbon dating of the Shivling found inside the Gyanvapi Mosque complex in 2022. . The order has been passed on an appeal by the Gyanvapi Masjid Management Committee. The appeal was filed by the Muslim side on Thursday. The Supreme Court on Friday asked the Archaeological Survey of India not to conduct carbon dating of a ‘Shivling’ inside the Gyanvapi Masjid-Kashi Vishwanath corridor till the next hearing of the matter. The court said that the order of the HC has to be examined closely.

A bench of Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and Justices PS Narasimha and JB Pardiwala is hearing the matter. The Hindu side has already put a caveat in the court. On May 12, the Allahabad High Court had ordered carbon dating of the alleged Shivling in the Gyanvapi Masjid complex of Varanasi to find out how old the alleged Shivling is. Also, the court had said that this carbon dating would be done only under the supervision of the court.

In the Gyanvapi Mosque Case, Huzaifa Ahmadi of the Muslim side has said in the Supreme Court that we have approached the Supreme Court against the High Court’s order on carbon dating. Ahmadi said in the court that carbon dating can start from 22nd i.e. Monday. In such a situation, there is a need to ban it. Hindu side’s lawyer Vishnu Jain said that we have been informed by the Archaeological Survey of India that the site will not be harmed in any way. Commenting on this, the Chief Justice said that we can also take the report from the Archaeological Survey of India. However, let the government also consider this.
