Rajasthan: 3 army missiles misfired in Jaisalmer’s Pokhran, debris fell in nearby field, order for inquiry

A military exercise was underway by a unit of the Indian Army on Friday at the Pokaran field firing range in Rajasthan’s Jaisalmer district. During this, three surface-to-air missiles fell at different places in Jaisalmer due to misfire. The place where these missiles have fallen, huge pits have been formed there. The army has found debris of two of the three misfired missiles and the search is on for the third.

All the three missiles misfired, due to which they exploded in the sky and after that their debris was found separately. Wreckage of one of the misfired missiles was found in a field near Ajasar village outside the field firing range. Whereas, the debris of the second missile was found in a deserted area away from Satyay village. There was no damage to any military personnel or property in this incident. Along with this, the officials have ordered an inquiry into the matter and the investigation has been started.

this happened before

The incident took place more than a year after the BrahMos missile was accidentally fired into Pakistani territory. Earlier on 9 March 2022, a missile was fired by mistake. Three officers of the Indian Air Force were held responsible for the incident. The Central Government took action in the matter and three officers of the Indian Air Force were dismissed after a Court of Inquiry.

Union Defense Minister Rajnath Singh informed Parliament about the incident and said that the standard operating procedures for operation, maintenance and inspection of such systems are being reviewed.
