Shock to the government in the Bhopal gas tragedy case, the Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court rejected the curative petition

Bhopal. The Supreme Court has given a big blow to the Central Government in the case related to the Bhopal gas tragedy. The Constitution Bench of the Court rejected the curative petition of the Centre, in which an additional 7800 crore compensation was demanded for the gas victims. The Constitution Bench said that 6 times compensation has already been given in this case. The court also said that the petition was filed late. The Center should have come to the matter earlier. After the dismissal of the petition, now the way for additional compensation to the gas victims has been closed.

Curative petition was filed in the year 2010

In 2010, through a curative petition, the Center appealed to Dow Chemicals to get an additional compensation of 7800 crores. According to government records, in 1984, 3700 people were killed in the gas accident on the night of 2-3 December. The central government had demanded this amount from Dow Chemicals, the firm that bought Union Carbide Corporation. After the gas tragedy, Union Carbide Corporation had given compensation of $ 470 million (Rs 715 crore) to the victims. On January 12, 2023, the SC had reserved the decision on the curative petition of the Central Government. Keeping its side, the government had said – the victims cannot be left in the lurch.
