One million accidents due to antimicrobial resistance

Bhopal. A workshop was organized on Wednesday at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Bhopal. The workshop brought together several experts to discuss the overuse of antibiotics and the harm caused by it. The workshop was inaugurated by Medical Education Minister Vishwas Sarang. While the workshop was presided over by the Chairman of the Governing Body of AIIMS, Prof. By YK Gupta. Experts said that due to antimicrobial resistance (AMR), about 10 million i.e. one crore deaths are estimated to occur worldwide by the year 2050. Not only this, about one million accidents occurring globally every year are estimated to cause death due to antimicrobial resistance. This problem has been described as a hidden epidemic by WHO. It has also been highlighted by various governmental and non-governmental agencies to tackle this problem of antimicrobial resistance. We need to stop the misuse and mis-use of antibiotics. There is a need for a large scale public awareness campaign among doctors and the general public to create awareness on this problem. A one-day brainstorming session was organized by AIIMS, Bhopal in collaboration with Ministry of Health, Government of Madhya Pradesh and Global Antibiotic Research and Development Partnership (GARDP) on the topic of Fighting Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR).
